Introduction

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque (Arabic :جامع الشيخ زايد الكبير) is located in Abu Dhabi, the capital city of the United Arab Emirates.

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque was initiated by the late President of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), HH Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who is fondly thought of as the father of the UAE. His final resting place is located on the grounds beside the mosque.

As the country’s grand mosque, it is the key place of worship for Friday gathering and Eid prayers. It is the largest mosque in the UAE and numbers during Eid can be more than forty thousand people.

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Center (SZGMC) offices are located in the east minarets. SZGMC manages the day to day operations, as a place of worship and Friday gathering and also a center of learning and discovery through its educational cultural activities and visitor programs. Information and online visitor services are available through the website www.szgmc.ae.

The library, located in the north/east minaret, serves the community with classic books and publications addressing a range of Islamic subjects: sciences, civilization, calligraphy, the arts, coins and includes some rare publications dating back more than 200 years! In reflection of the diversity of the Islamic world and the United Arab Emirates, the collection comprises of material in a broad range of languages including Arabic, English, French, Italian, Spanish, German and Korean. The library is open everyday except Fridays and full information can be found at the official website (www.szgmc.ae.

Design.

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque's design and construction 'unites the world', using artisans and materials from many countries including Italy, Germany, Morocco, India, Turkey, Malaysia, Iran, China, United Kingdom, New Zealand, Greece and of course the United Arab Emirates. More than 3,000 workers and 38 renowned contracting companies took part in the construction of the Mosque! Natural materials were chosen for much of its design and construction due to their long-lasting qualities, including marble, stone, gold, semi-precious stones, crystals and ceramics.

Dimension and Statistic

The Mosque is large enough to accommodate over 40,000 worshippers. The main prayer hall can accommodate over 7,000 worshippers. There are two smaller prayer halls, with a 1,500-capacity each, one of which is the female prayer hall.

There are four minarets on the four corners of the courtyard which rise about 107 m (351 ft) in height. The courtyard with its floral design, measures about 17,000 m2 (180,000 sq ft),and is considered to be the largest example of marble mosaic in the world.

SIVEC from Greece & Macedonia, used on the external cladding (a total of 115,119 square metres of cladding has been used on the Mosque, including the four minarets) • Lasa from Italy, used in the internal elevations • Makrana from India, used in the annexes and offices • Aquabiana and Biano from Italy • East White and Ming Green from China.

Some Key of Architectural Features

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque has many special and unique elements: The carpet in the main prayer hall is considered to be the world's largest carpet made by Iran's Carpet Company and designed by Iranian artist Ali Khaliqi.[8] This carpet measures 5,627 m2 (60,570 sq ft), and was made by around 1,200-1,300 female carpet knotters. The weight of this carpet is 35 ton and is predominantly made from wool (originating from New Zealand and Iran). There are 2,268,000,000 knots within the carpet and it took approximately two years to complete.

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque has seven imported chandeliers from Germany that incorporate millions of Swarovski crystals. The largest chandelier is the largest known chandelier inside a mosque and has a 10 m (33 ft) diameter and a 15 m (49 ft) height.

The pools along the arcades reflect the Mosque’s spectacular columns, which becomes even more glorious at night. The unique lightning system was designed by lightning architects Jonathon Speirs and Major to reflect the phases of the moon. Beautiful bluish gray clouds are projected in lights onto the external walls and get brighter and darker according to the phase of the moon.

The 96 columns in the main prayer hall are clad with marble and inlaid with mother of pearl, one of the few places where you will see this craftsmanship.

The 99 names (qualities or attributes) of Allah (God) are featured on the Qibla wall in traditional Kufi calligraphy, designed by the prominent UAE calligrapher - Mohammed Mandi Al Tamimi. The Qibla wall also features subtle fibre-optic lighting, which is integrated as part of the organic design.

In total, three calligraphy styles - Naskhi, Thuloth and Kufi – are used throughout the mosque and were drafted by Mohammed Mandi Al Tamimi (UAE), Farouk Haddad (Syria) and Mohammed Allam (Jordan). (sources: wikipedia)

The Pursuit of Happyness

Khamis, 16 Jun 2011

I love this story...this is the best acting by the Will Smith with his son,Jaden Smith..adaptation from the real life storey of Chris Gardner who have survived for his future.

In 1981, in San Francisco, Chris Gardner (Will Smith) invests his family's savings in portable bone-density scanners which he tries to demonstrate and sell to doctors. The investment proves to be a white elephant which financially breaks the family and as a result, his wife Linda (Thandie Newton) leaves him and their son Christopher (Jaden Smith) and moves to New York. While downtown trying to sell one of his scanners, Chris meets a manager for Dean Witter and impresses him by solving a Rubik's Cube during a short cab ride.

Chris does not have enough money for the cab fare and flees the cab driver into a subway station where he barely escapes the cab driver but loses one of his bone scanners in the process. This new relationship with the Dean Witter manager earns him the chance to become an intern stockbroker. Despite arriving there unkempt and shabbily dressed due to an emergency, Chris is offered the internship. Chris is further set back when his bank account is garnished by the IRS for unpaid taxes, and he and his young son are evicted. As a result they are homeless, and are forced at one point to stay in a bathroom at a subway station.

Motivation drives him to find the Glide Memorial United Methodist Church, which has a homeless shelter primarily for single mothers and their children. Due to demand for the limited rooms, Chris must frantically race from his internship work early each afternoon in order to land a place in line. Chris finds the bone scanner that he lost in the subway station from a demented man who believes it to be a time machine and it is now damaged, but Chris finally repairs it. Disadvantaged by his limited work hours, and knowing that maximizing his client contacts and profits is the only way to earn the one paid position that he and his 19 competitors are fighting for, Chris develops a number of ways to make phone sales calls more efficiently.

He also reaches out to potential high value customers, defying protocol. One sympathetic prospect takes him and his son to a professional football game. Regardless of Chris's challenges, he never reveals his lowly circumstances to his co-workers, even going so far as to lend one of his bosses five dollars for a cab, a sum he can barely afford.

Concluding his internship, Chris is called into a meeting with his managers. His work has paid off and he is offered the position. Fighting back tears, he rushes to his son's daycare, hugging him. They walk down the street, joking with each other and are passed by a man in a business suit (the real Chris Gardner in a cameo). The epilogue reveals that Chris went on to form his own multi-million dollar brokerage firm.

Design a Tree House for a Tropical Island Resort

Design a Tree House for a Tropical Island Resort

The competition sites are near the beaches of Fiji, Vietnam,China and Maui, where there are no existing trees. the majority of the tree houses will be in coconut palm trees that will be brought to the site and planted as per the design. the tree size is the designers choice, they can vary from ten feet to forty-five feet in height.

You must consider that all palm trees grow from the top up, a construction in a palm tree two feet from the ground will never move up.

All connections to a tree must be in the form of a stainless- steel sleeve about 3/16-Inch Thick and about ten inches high. For the high decks, It is not a good idea to make rigid connections between all the trees as the trees can be blown in different directions and fight each other in high winds. The sites in southeast Asia are liable to have typhoons and heavy monsoon rains, Which means you must design to resist heavy wind loads. Basically, you must use natural materials but, although tin is not natural, corru-gated tin is natural in the jungle as roofing material because of the rain.

You can also choose to design a roof of vinyl/plastic that is stapled on and replaced every year. This kind of roof also serves to let in light in the dark areas under the tree canopies. The sites and climate allow for a close relationship to nature and a openness not normally allowed in construction. There is almost no need for walls, only for screening materials which are available locally in beautiful colors.

The total floor area should be between five-hundred and one thousand square feet and should accommodate two to six people

No structural elements may touch the ground except for access stairways. For the there are several varieties of hardwoods in china. Vietnam, and Fiji. In Hawaii you have to be more creative.

The designs must include a toilet and a shower of ecological nature. The shower will have propane water heaters, the toilets will for most part be compo-stable, as most sites may not have either sewage or septic systems. you can incorporate the ground-floor area for cooking and showers, most sites will not have electricity, even for construction.

However, since good handicrafts-men are plentiful, designs that emphasize craftsmanship are encouraged. Building codes for tree houses have not yet been regulated in any of these countries. the winning tree houses will be adjusted , when necessary, to make them safe for human habitation.

The entries must include plans, sections, and elevations as well as sketches, significant details, and any written information you may deem important. The winners will be asked to submit a small scale model or a 3d file.

The winning designs will be judged by firmness, commodity, and delight, The designers of those tree houses selected for the top one hundred will win a free months stay at one of the authors treehouses in Hawaii or China.

Winners of the First,Second and third place will win, in addition to a free stay, free round trip airfare. but if you are too busy for a trip no problem we still want your tree house Designs, winners will also receive a cash prize: First place $5000 Second place $4000 and third place $3000.

Registration Deadline: August 29th 2011
